Chantal Bernier

Chantal Bernier is Of Counsel and Co-Chair of Dentons' Global Privacy and Cybersecurity Group, focusing on privacy, cybersecurity, AI governance and digital sovereignty. She joined Dentons after nearly six years as the head of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC), where she led the federal agency responsible for protecting Canadians' personal information.

She advises clients on compliance with privacy laws, data breach investigations, cross‑border data transfers, and privacy governance, with experience spanning health sciences, financial services, adtech, and government sectors. Notable matters include advising on privacy compliance for ad campaigns and data analytics, providing privacy analysis of Sidewalk Labs' "Smart City" proposal for Quayside, and representing Equifax in the investigation of the 2017 data breach. She also develops privacy policies, audits privacy programs, and advises on the intersection of privacy and artificial intelligence.

Chantal holds an LL.M. from the London School of Economics and Political Science and an LL.B. from the Université de Sherbrooke. She has been recognized by Chambers Canada for Privacy & Data Protection, by The Legal 500 Canada for Artificial Intelligence, and by The Best Lawyers in Canada for Privacy and Data Security Law and FinTech Practice.
