Helen T. Newland

Helen T. Newland is a Partner in the firm's Energy Law practice, based in the Toronto office. She is recognized as a leading energy practitioner with over 30 years of experience in both the public and private sectors, including four years as counsel to the Canadian Energy Regulator. She has particular expertise in energy project development and utility regulation.

Ms. Newland has acted as counsel to some of Canada's largest natural gas and electricity distributors in rate and facility applications, regulatory compliance, and conservation initiatives, and has appeared before the Canadian Energy Regulator, the Ontario Energy Board, and various appellate courts. Her project experience includes advising Atura Power on a 250 megawatt battery energy storage system joint venture bid, K2 Wind on its 270 MW wind farm, SkyPower Global on a US$1.3 billion solar investment in Uzbekistan, and financial institutions on project financings including a $670 million gas-fired power plant and a $403 million combined cycle facility. She has also advised on the development of numerous wind, solar, and transmission projects across Canada, and has extensive experience in energy agreements, environmental assessments, and aboriginal consultation.

Helen holds an LLB from Dalhousie University (1981), where she was awarded the Alistair Fraser Prize for third place standing in first year, a Master's degree in Natural Resource Management from the University of Manitoba (1977), and an Honours B.Sc. in Biology from Queen's University (1975).
