Joel A. Nitikman, KC

Joel A. Nitikman, KC is a Partner in Dentons' Tax group in Vancouver, focusing on tax litigation and dispute resolution for almost four decades. He has extensive experience in federal and provincial income and commodity tax litigation, and has acted as counsel in numerous tax cases at all levels of court.

He advises on corporate and individual business tax, offshore tax planning, corporate reorganizations, GST and provincial commodity taxes, and has been involved in extensive cross‑border tax planning, including for the entertainment industry, offshore trusts, and Canada‑US corporate reorganizations. He has obtained Advance Rulings from the Canada Revenue Agency and provincial tax authorities, and has acted as an expert tax witness in civil litigation.

Joel holds an LL.B (Gold Medal) from the University of Manitoba (1985), an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law (1994), and a B.Sc from the University of British Columbia (1982).

He is the recipient of the Canadian Tax Foundation's Douglas J. Sherbaniuk Distinguished Writing Award (2006, 2018) and the Canadian Tax Foundation's Lifetime Contribution Award (2022), and is recognized by The Best Lawyers in Canada, The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, Who's Who Legal and ITR World Tax.
