Justin E. Okerman

Justin E. Okerman is an Associate in the firm's Litigation and Dispute Resolution group, based in the Edmonton office, practicing in Health Care Law. His practice focuses on health law, regulatory law, professional liability, and product liability, assisting a wide variety of clients including tech companies, automobile manufacturers, and regulated professionals. He has represented clients before every level of court in Alberta, as well as regulatory bodies including Hearing Tribunals, Appeal Commissions, Provincial Health Authorities, Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and Offices of the Privacy Commissioner.

Mr. Okerman has extensive experience regarding the licensing, inspection, importation, compliance, and regulation of medical devices, natural health products, drugs, and food products under the Food and Drugs Act. He has assisted clients with procuring and maintaining Medical Device and Medical Device Establishment Licenses, Drug Identification Numbers, Natural Product Numbers, and packaging and labelling compliance. He successfully argued before the Alberta Court of Appeal in favour of a restrictive framework limiting costs awarded against regulated professionals in disciplinary proceedings.

Justin holds a J.D. from the University of Saskatchewan (2021), an LLM in Information and Communication Technology Law from the University of Oslo (2020), a BEH from Concordia University of Edmonton (2014), and a BSc from the University of Alberta (2013). He has worked in both scientific research and public health prior to his legal career. He is a sessional lecturer for the Environmental Health program at Concordia University of Edmonton and a sessional examiner for the University of Oslo on Internet Governance, Transnational Platform Governance, and Cybersecurity Regulation.
