Kalen Lumsden

Kalen Lumsden is a Partner in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution group in Dentons' Edmonton office. His practice focuses on Construction Law, dealing with complex disputes involving infrastructure, construction and rail.

Kalen has expertise in drafting complex and technical motions and submissions, analysing and communicating damages claims worth hundreds of millions of dollars, collaborating with engineering and damages quantification experts, and advising clients to achieve favourable outcomes in mediations and settlement of commercial claims.

He has represented clients before all levels of court in Alberta, the Federal Court and in writing at the Supreme Court of Canada. He has also appeared at hearings before various boards and tribunals, including the Law Enforcement Review Board, Alberta Human Rights Tribunal and Real Estate Council of Alberta.

His experience includes advising a client in complex arbitration proceedings involving claims exceeding CA$350 million related to design errors in a Canadian PPP light rail project, successfully representing an Edmonton Police Service member on an appeal from a Law Enforcement Review Board Decision at the Alberta Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada, prosecuting a claim for fraudulent conveyance in relation to a mining operation, and advising a client in arbitration proceedings relating to claims arising from the termination of an industrial lease.

In addition to his legal practice, Kalen serves as Civil Claims Duty Counsel and served two terms as a member of the Board of Directors for the Terra Centre for Teen Parents. He holds a JD from Osgoode Hall Law School, a BA (with Distinction) from the University of Victoria, and a Diploma of Music Performance (First Class Standing) from MacEwan University.
