Margot E. Patterson

Margot E. Patterson is Counsel with Dentons' Intellectual Property, Communications Law, Competition Law, and Media, Entertainment and Sports practice groups, specialising in Intellectual Property Law. She advises leading businesses in entertainment, media, and e‑commerce on growing, promoting and protecting their businesses in Canada and across borders.

Margot advises broadcasters and content distributors on navigating Canadian rules and standards, including corporate and regulatory requirements for service launches, licensing for copyright‑protected content, and negotiating licence agreements for music and audiovisual content. She regularly acts as an expert advisor to international organisations on the Canadian copyright system. She also advises clients on advertising and marketing issues, brand protection, competitive disputes, and direct‑to‑consumer communications. Notable experience includes advising Spotify AB in a judicial‑review challenge to the CRTC's new "base contribution" regime under the amended Broadcasting Act, named one of Lexpert's Top 10 Business Decisions of 2024/2025, and advising streaming platforms on Canada's new broadcasting regime under the Online Streaming Act.

Before joining Dentons, Margot was General Counsel and Vice‑President, Legal Affairs for the Canadian Association of Broadcasters. She holds an LL.B. (with Distinction) from McGill University and a Master of Public Administration from Queen's University.
