Scott Sweatman

Scott Sweatman is a Partner at Dentons Canada LLP and the Leader of Pensions, Benefits & Executive Compensation for Dentons Canada, focusing on pension, benefits and executive compensation law.

He has been practising law since 1987 and has specialised in pensions and benefits since 1990. He advises clients on establishing and maintaining pension, benefit and deferred compensation plans, regulatory compliance, governance, funding, and the impact of mergers and acquisitions on these plans. He also works on executive and deferred compensation plans, stock options, retiring allowances, profit sharing, and corporate reorganizations, and assists professional athletes in establishing retirement compensation arrangements. He acts as an arbitrator in public sector pension plan disputes.

Scott served as past Co-Chair of the Alberta-British Columbia Joint Expert Panel on Pension Standards, which reviewed pension legislation and recommended reforms. He is past national and regional chair of the Canadian Pension & Benefits Institute, past chair of the Pension, Benefits and Compensation Section of the Canadian Bar Association (British Columbia), and former member of the Pension Advisory Council to the British Columbia Government. He also served on the Board of Directors of NAV Canada (2010–2022) and chaired its Pension Committee.

He holds an LL.B from the University of Victoria (1986) and a B.A. (Honours) from the University of Winnipeg. He was admitted to the British Columbia Bar in 1987.
