Ara Basmadjian

Ara Basmadjian is a Partner in the litigation and dispute resolution group at Dentons Canada LLP, focusing on Commercial Litigation. For more than a decade, clients have turned to him for his expertise in complex corporate and commercial litigation.

He has particular experience in cases involving shareholders’ rights and oppression remedies, private international law, debt recovery, product liability, class actions, and extraordinary remedies such as injunctions. He has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (including the Commercial List), the Divisional Court, the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Supreme Court of British Columbia, and the Federal Court.

His representative experience includes advising on the CA$1.8 billion sale of Magnet Forensics Inc., defending Sleeman Breweries in a CA$1.4 billion proposed class action, and acting for Canadian National Railway in injunction and related proceedings. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCIArb) and holds the Qualified Arbitrator (Q.Arb) designation from the ADR Institute of Canada.

Ara is recognised in The Legal 500 Canada for Dispute Resolution (2022). He writes extensively on litigation topics, and his work has been cited by the Court of Appeal for Ontario. He holds a JD (cum laude) from the University of Ottawa (2012), an MA from the University of Western Ontario (2009), and a B.A. (with Distinction) from the University of Western Ontario (2008).
