Gil Rémillard

Gil Rémillard is a Counsel at Dentons in Montréal, with a distinguished career spanning academia, law and politics. He focuses on constitutional and administrative law, as well as public international law and civil law reform.

He holds degrees in Philosophy, Political Science and Economics from the University of Ottawa, as well as a doctorate in Law from France and England (1972). He served as Professor of Constitutional and Administrative Law at Laval University's Faculty of Law and was a member of the National Assembly of Québec (1985–1994), holding several key cabinet portfolios including Minister of Justice, Minister of Canadian Affairs, Minister of International Relations and Minister of Public Security. As Minister of Justice, he led the creation of Québec's new Civil Code, unanimously adopted by the National Assembly and coming into force on January 1, 1994. He also played a central role in negotiating the Meech Lake Accord (1987) and the Charlottetown Accord (1992).

He has served as Special Advisor to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney on constitutional and international matters, advised Canadian delegations at the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund, and has appeared before all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He assisted the governments of the Czech Republic, Romania and Bulgaria in reforming their civil codes to facilitate EU accession, and chaired the Canadian Judicial Compensation and Benefits Commission (2015–2019).

He is a member of the Order of Canada, an Officer of the Ordre national du Québec, and a Chevalier of the Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur (promoted to officer in 2017). He was appointed "Advocatus Emeritus" by the Barreau du Québec (2007) and Conseiller en loi de l'État du Québec by the Government of Québec (2026).
