Y. Monica Song is a Partner and the national co-leader of Dentons Canada's Regulatory group, based in Ottawa. She specializes in advising clients spearheading growth and innovation in the digital economy, with deep expertise in technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) regulation, competition and market entry, cybersecurity, privacy and data protection, and health and safety regulation.
She oversees skilled multi-jurisdictional teams providing strategic advice to wireline and wireless network operators, Internet service providers, conventional and digital media undertakings, space and satellite sector players, online apps and cloud-based providers, device manufacturers, and global players in the food, medical device, natural health product, cosmetics and consumer product industries. She has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court, the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the Canadian International Trade Tribunal, the Ontario Energy Board, and many other tribunals. She served as a member of the expert panel appointed by the Government of Canada to review the legislative framework governing the communications industry (2018–2020), and was appointed the Broadcasting Arbitrator of Canada under the Canada Elections Act in July 2020.
Monica holds an LL.B from Université Laval (1995), an LL.B from the University of Western Ontario (1994), and a B.A. (Hons) from the University of Toronto (1991). She clerked with Justice John Charles Major of the Supreme Court of Canada and interned at the Québec Court of Appeal for Justice Paul Arthur Gendreau. She is fluently bilingual.
She is recognized by Chambers Canada and Chambers Global for Telecoms, Media & Broadcasting, and by The Legal 500 Canada, Who's Who Legal and The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory in telecommunications, computer and IT law.
