Robert J. de Guzman, KC, ICD.D

Robert J. de Guzman, KC, ICD.D is a Partner in Dentons' Edmonton office, co-leader of the national Banking and Finance group, and a member of the Dentons Canada Region Board, where he plays a significant role in the strategic direction of the firm. His practice focuses on Banking and Finance Law.

His practice includes a focus on both financing and general corporate/commercial matters, assisting both lenders and borrowers with financing transactions that allow businesses to obtain funds necessary to meet their goals and objectives. Robert has a particular interest in supporting companies that service Northern Alberta's resource-based industries and contribute to building healthy and sustainable local communities.

His experience includes advising the Edmonton Elks Football Club with respect to the sale of substantially all of its assets to EE Football Club Limited Partnership; advising Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Alberta, by its agent Alberta Investment Management Corporation, in respect of subordinated security in connection with a private placement of CA$30 million for Pine Cliff Energy Ltd.; advising on the procurement of a venture capital investment amounting to US$6.0 million from a Silicon Valley private equity fund by the issuance of convertible preferred stock; advising Millar Western Forest Products on its CA$150 million offering of senior secured first lien high yield notes; advising Banister Pipelines Corp. in relation to the sale of its pipeline construction and maintenance business to Banister Pipelines Constructors Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Quanta Services, Inc.; advising HSBC Bank Canada as the lender in connection with Fulcrum Capital Partners Inc.'s majority interest acquisition of Nilex Inc.; advising Rexall Health on the sale of a large portion of its independent banner and franchise business to McKesson Corporation; advising on Matrikon Inc.'s US$139 million acquisition by Honeywell International Inc.; and advising Rexall Sports Corporation in the acquisition of the Edmonton Oilers National Hockey League Franchise.

He holds an LLB (with Distinction) from the University of Alberta (2007) and a B.Comm. (Hons) from the University of British Columbia (1999). He holds the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors and is a past Chair of the Business Law Section Executive of the Canadian Bar Association.
