Bill (William) G. Gilliland, ICD.D

Bill (William) G. Gilliland, ICD.D is a Partner at Dentons and a member of the firm's Corporate, Securities and Corporate Finance, and Mergers and Acquisitions practice groups. His practice focuses on Mergers and Acquisitions.

Bill advises public and private company buyers, sellers and target companies on numerous merger and acquisition transactions, primarily in the power, renewable energy and infrastructure sectors, both in Canada and internationally. He has worked with board special committees on strategic transactions and has advised numerous public company boards of directors on governance and decision-making issues. His practice also involves energy and services companies on transaction and project work.

Bill is a leader in ESG and sustainable finance, representing Dentons Canada as a member of the International Capital Markets Association Green Bond Principles since 2014 and as a member of the CSA Group's technical committee developing the made-in-Canada Transition Finance Taxonomy. He is a member of the Advisory Council to the Green and Social Bond Principles Executive Committee, and his work includes green, transition, sustainability and sustainability-linked loans and bonds.

His recent experience includes advising Capital Power Corporation on its CA$517 million bought deal public offering of common shares and CA$150 million concurrent private placement to partially finance the acquisition of two flexible generation assets in PJM, and advising The Shaw Family Living Trust in connection with the approximately CA$26 billion acquisition of Shaw Communications Inc. by Rogers Communications Inc. He holds an LLB from Dalhousie University and a BA (Hons) from Queen's University, and holds the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
