Carman R. McNary, KC

Carman R. McNary, KC, is Senior Counsel in Dentons' Edmonton office, practicing in the firm's Tax Law and Corporate practice. He has been immersed in Canada's taxation world for more than 35 years, earning a reputation as one of the country's leading authorities on tax compliance and dispute resolution with government agencies, as well as on corporate tax strategies, structures, and governance of tax risk.

Mr. McNary advises Canadian and international companies on tax-efficient structures and effective tax management, including First Nation enterprises, cross-border investment, private and public transactions, acquisitions, divestitures, reorganizations, transfer pricing, and withholding taxes. He has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada, extensively before the Tax Court of Canada, the Federal Court Trial Division and Federal Court of Appeal, and all levels of court within Alberta on matters relating to Income Tax, GST, and other commodity taxes. He served as Chair of Dentons' National Tax group for 10 years and is a former Managing Partner of the Edmonton office.

Carman holds an LLB from the University of Alberta (1981), a BA from the University of Alberta (1978), and completed the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants In-Depth Tax Course (1992) and the Directors Education Program from the Rotman School of Management and University of Alberta School of Business (2013). He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2010 and received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Alberta in 2019.
