Gergely Hegedus

Gergely Hegedus is a Partner in the Tax Group at Dentons in Edmonton, with a practice that focuses specifically on tax litigation and dispute resolution.

For more than eight years, he represented the Canada Revenue Agency as Legal Counsel in the Tax Law Services Section of the Department of Justice Canada. During his tenure, he successfully litigated matters before the Court of King's Bench of Alberta, the Tax Court of Canada, the Federal Court, and the Federal Court of Appeal.

His reported cases include Kichton Contracting Ltd. v. M.N.R. (2024 TCC 20) on the insurability of shareholder-employees; Ifi v. Attorney General of Canada (2020 FC 1150) on TFSA over-contribution relief; Smith v. The Queen (2019 FCA 173) on the taxation of employment benefits; Helgesen v. Canada (2017 FCA 21) on director's liability assessments; and Brassard v. Canada (2017 FCA 205) on non-arm's length transfers. He is a frequent author and presenter on tax litigation, audit, and dispute resolution topics.

He holds an LL.B from the University of Alberta (2009) and a BA from the University of Victoria (2006). He serves on the Board of Directors of the ITU World Triathlon Edmonton and is a member of the Wolters Kluwer Editorial Board.
