John J. Salmas

John J. Salmas is a Partner in Dentons' Toronto office, focusing on corporate restructurings, financial services and proceedings under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (BIA). He advises debtors, financial institutions, bondholder groups, indenture trustees, monitors, receivers and acquiring entities in domestic and cross-border insolvency proceedings.

He has acted on significant restructuring matters including Ligado Networks LLC in its US Chapter 11 proceedings involving USD 8.6 billion of funded debt; the Pride Group multi-billion dollar CCAA and Chapter 15 proceedings for Bank of Montreal; acting as counsel for indenture trustees in major insolvencies including Nortel Networks, Essar Steel Algoma, Dominion Diamond Mines and Calfrac Inc.; and representing debtors in CCAA proceedings including Stelco Inc., BioExx and the John Forsyth group of companies. His experience spans multiple industries including automotive, aviation, media, mining and real estate.

John holds an LL.B from the University of Toronto (1997) and a B.Comm from Dalhousie University (1993). Prior to his legal career, he was employed by one of the Big Four accounting firms.

He is recognized by Chambers Global, Chambers Canada, The Legal 500 Canada, The Best Lawyers in Canada and IFLR1000 Canada for Restructuring and Insolvency. He is a member of the Insolvency Institute of Canada, past President of the Toronto Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association, and a member of INSOL International and the American Bankruptcy Institute.
