Robert J. Kennedy

Robert J. Kennedy is a Partner and the national Co-leader of Dentons' Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy group, based in Toronto. His practice focuses on Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law, advising on insolvency and corporate restructuring matters.

Robert has extensive experience in corporate restructurings, receiverships and bankruptcy proceedings, creditor rights and enforcement, and out-of-court restructurings and work-outs. Known for his strategic approach, he has represented debtors, lenders, Court-appointed monitors and receivers, trustees, DIP lenders and purchasers of distressed assets in complex financing proceedings.

He advises on matters under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act, the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the Business Corporations Act. His experience includes advising the Court-appointed monitor in the CCAA proceedings of Eastern Meat Solutions Inc., advising Royal Bank of Canada as lender to Pride Group Logistics Ltd., and advising BP Canada Energy in connection with the cross-border proceedings of the Just Energy Group Inc.

Robert has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Alberta Court of King's Bench and Alberta Court of Appeal. As an Indigenous lawyer, he is committed to advancing education and representation with Indigenous communities, dedicating his time to board and committee work focused on enhancing access to education and supporting Indigenous learners. He holds an LLB from the University of Ottawa and a BA from Carleton University, and is recognised by Chambers Global, The Legal 500 Canada and The Best Lawyers in Canada for Restructuring and Insolvency.
