Ken Dhaliwal

Ken Dhaliwal is a Partner and the National Practice Group Co-Leader for Media and Entertainment at Dentons, based in Toronto. His practice focuses on Entertainment Law, specialising in media and entertainment law.

He provides strategic counsel to an extensive client base encompassing Canadian and international independent producers, foreign broadcasters, major Hollywood studios and streamers, distributors, financial institutions, and private equity firms.

Ken frequently advises clients on the areas of financing, distribution, Canadian incentives (including Canadian Heritage issues), intellectual property protection, and the structuring of productions and transactions to maximise the benefits of Canadian incentives.

He remains a frequently sought-after industry speaker. In the past year, he was invited to address an accomplished cohort of international producers at the inaugural Canada-Germany Animation Lab, an initiative designed to foster co-production opportunities between Canadian and German mid-career producers in animated content.

His experience includes advising Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. in connection with its acquisition of Nova Scotia-based video game developer HB Studios Multimedia Limited, and advising Breakthrough Entertainment Inc. in the sale of its kids and family library and development slate to 9 Story Media Group.

He holds an LLB from the University of Western Ontario (1991) and a BA from York University (1988). He is recognised by Chambers Canada in Band 1 for Media and Entertainment, by The Legal 500 Canada in its Hall of Fame for Media and Entertainment and Technology, Media and Telecoms, by The Best Lawyers in Canada for Entertainment Law, and by The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory for Entertainment Law. He was named "Lawyer of the Year" by Best Lawyers for Entertainment Law (2025, 2027) and received the Women in Film & Television – Toronto 2015 Crystal Mentorship Award and the 2014 Lexpert Zenith Award.
