Paul D. Shantz

Paul D. Shantz is Counsel in the Real Estate Group at Dentons in Toronto. He specializes in commercial real estate law and environmental law, advising clients on matters ranging from commercial leasing to land sales and acquisitions. He regularly deals with large, multi-jurisdiction asset sale, purchase, and secured transactions, and is an expert on Ontario land transfer tax. As a member of the Environmental Law Group, he manages various environmental issues for clients, including due diligence for environmental liabilities, negotiating contractual provisions relating to environmental issues, and supervising environmental assessments.

His experience includes advising Motorola Solutions on its acquisition of Rave Mobile Safety and Futurecom Systems Group; advising KPS Capital Partners on its agreement to acquire Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope Inc. for approximately $3.45 billion; advising Atura Power on the acquisition of a 1,858 MW portfolio of natural gas-fired power plants from TC Energy for approximately $2.8 billion; advising National Bank of Canada on project financings for solar and wind energy projects; advising on the sale of 5150/5160 Yonge Street for CA$161 million; and advising CN on the sale of non-core rail lines in Ontario.

He holds an LL.B from the University of Toronto (1977). He is a member of the Environmental Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association and has served as a past director of Bellwoods Centres for Community Living Inc., chairing its Property and Development Committee and the board during the development of a supportive housing project in downtown Toronto.
