Al (Allan) L. McLarty, KC

Al (Allan) L. McLarty, KC is Counsel at Dentons in Calgary, where he is a senior counsel in the firm's energy and regulatory practice group. His practice focuses on Energy Law, specifically energy regulation and project development.

Al joined the firm after a lengthy practice with the Energy Resources Conservation Board, where he obtained a broad range of energy-related regulatory experience. His expertise derives initially from the perspective of counsel with an energy regulator and subsequently through the representation of industry in the steerage and development of significant energy projects through both Federal and Provincial regulatory approval processes.

His experience includes advising on oil sands project developments (mine and SAGD), sour and sweet gas project developments, oil project developments, and Federal and Provincial transmission pipeline project developments. He also advises on rate regulation issues, inter-industry energy disputes including coalbed methane ownership and gas/bitumen priority, and has appeared regularly before tribunals such as the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board and the National Energy Board.

Al's experience has facilitated the successful resolution of issues with government, regulators, landowners, environmental interests, First Nations and competing energy developers. He holds an LLB and a BA from the University of Alberta and was appointed a Q.C. in Alberta in 2000.
