Derek Pontin

Derek Pontin is a Partner and the Calgary department leader for the Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy group at Dentons Canada. He has extensive experience in corporate insolvency and reorganization, and in all manner of restructuring and bankruptcy proceedings. His work has covered local, national, and international companies and business groups, engaged in domestic and cross-border restructurings, receiverships, and enforcement scenarios. His practice also includes oil and gas royalty and trust litigation, among other commercial finance and litigation matters.

He has acted for secured and unsecured creditors, companies and corporate groups in restructuring proceedings, receivers, trustees and other court officers, directors and officers, and other parties impacted by insolvency processes. His clients include banks, financial and credit institutions, solvent and insolvent corporations and partnerships, accounting and other professional firms, not-for-profit societies, and individuals. He regularly appears before the Alberta Court of King's Bench, Court of Appeal, Provincial Court, and the Federal Court.

He joined Dentons as a summer student in 2006 and commenced his articles with the Firm in 2007. He is recognized by The Best Lawyers in Canada for Insolvency and Financial Restructuring Law. He holds an LL.B from the University of Alberta (2007) and a B.Sc. (with Distinction) from the University of Calgary (2003).
