Hazel Saffery

Hazel Saffery is a Partner and the national Energy group leader at Dentons in Calgary, specializing in the energy transition landscape, with extensive experience in oil and gas, power and renewable energy, and carbon markets. She advises clients on energy acquisitions and divestitures, commercial transactions, joint ventures, independent power projects, and carbon credit development and trading.

Her oil and gas practice includes complex joint venture and partnership arrangements, purchase and sale agreements, and pipeline transportation projects. Notable matters include advising Dow Chemical Canada ULC on its US$6.5 billion Path2Zero net-zero emissions integrated ethylene cracker and derivatives facility, advising Cenovus on the sale of its Marten Hills Assets for CA$100 million, and advising Enbridge Inc. on its CA$1.75 billion sale of a renewable power portfolio to CPPIB. In power and renewables, she has advised on battery storage projects including Ontario's largest BESS project and the 2.6GW framework agreement for battery storage, as well as solar project divestitures. In carbon markets, she has advised Nature Conservancy of Canada on a CA$10 million carbon offset investment and the Government of Singapore on Article 6‑compliant carbon credit sourcing, and regularly advises on carbon credit due diligence and trading across compliance and voluntary markets.

Hazel holds an LL.B from the University of Manitoba (2008) and a Bachelor of Science from Trinity Western University (2003).
