Philip (Phil) M. Rimer

Philip (Phil) M. Rimer is a Partner and leads the Real Estate, Project Development, and Banking and Finance practice groups in Dentons' Ottawa office. With over three decades of experience, he is a highly respected dealmaker in complex commercial real estate and infrastructure projects.

He advises diverse national and international clients, including landowners, developers, pension funds, banks and public-sector entities. His practice encompasses the full spectrum of commercial real estate transactions, including the negotiation and documentation of acquisitions and dispositions, financings, leases and development projects. He is a leading authority on transactions structured under the Financial Administration Act and transactions with Indigenous stakeholders, primarily renewable energy and on-reserve infrastructure projects. Representative matters include advising on a CA$247.65 million CMHC-insured construction facility for a mixed-use project, a CA$183 million acquisition of an industrial portfolio, a CA$479 million acquisition of a major office complex, and a CA$10 billion Robinson Huron Treaty litigation funding facility for 17 Ontario First Nations.

Phil holds an LL.B from Osgoode Hall (1982), an M.A. from The Johns Hopkins University (1979), and a B.A. from Concordia University (1977).

He has been named "Lawyer of the Year" by Best Lawyers in Canada for Banking and Finance Law (2014, 2017, 2019) and Aboriginal Law (2020, 2022) in Ottawa. He is recognized by Chambers Canada for Real Estate (Ontario), by The Legal 500 Canada, and by The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory in multiple categories. He is a past part-time professor at the University of Ottawa’s Common Law Faculty and serves as a Director on the Board of Ottawa Riverkeeper.
