Roberto Aburto

Roberto Aburto is a Partner in Dentons Ottawa's Real Estate group and a member of the firm's municipal, land use planning and development law group, focusing on real estate and municipal law, land use planning, expropriation, and municipal property tax assessment.

He represents developers, municipalities, landowners and community organizations in complex disputes before the Ontario Land Tribunal, the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Divisional Court, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and the Assessment Review Board. Notable matters include advising on a 1,600‑unit development in Kingston, successfully defending the validity of an interim control by‑law, securing a significant development charges exemption for a university, and obtaining a CA$4 million award from a municipality in a development charges dispute. He also regularly advises on expropriation matters, including leading cases on costs and interests under the Expropriations Act, and on commercial lease rent arbitrations.

Roberto holds a J.D. from Michigan State University College of Law (2009), an LL.B. from the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law (2011), and a BBA from Wilfrid Laurier University (2005).

He is recognized by Chambers Canada for Real Estate: Zoning/Land Use (Ontario) and by The Best Lawyers in Canada for Municipal Law and Expropriation Law. He is a recipient of the Ottawa Business Journal "Forty under 40" award and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for his contributions to the Commonwealth.
