Emily McMurtry

Emily McMurtry is a Senior Associate and arbitrator in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution group at Dentons in Ottawa. Her practice focuses on international and domestic arbitration, with particular expertise in jurisdictional and procedural issues across various institutional rulesets, including ICC, ICDR, CIArb, JAMS, VanIAC, and ADRIC. She represents clients in disputes involving product liability, professional negligence, mining industry agreements, construction matters, and shareholder disputes.

She has successfully represented clients in arbitrations governed by Canadian and English law, including a half-billion dollar international arbitration on behalf of a Canadian mining client involving complex issues of contractual interpretation, smelter royalty calculations, and buy-back rights. She is also experienced in matters involving contracts for the sale of goods, including issues arising under the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG).

She was appointed to the Fruit and Vegetable Dispute Resolution Corporation's roster of arbitrators in 2022 and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. She has served on the ADRIC Committee's Arbitration Modernization Project and completed the Toronto Commercial Arbitration Society's Gold Standard Course in Arbitration in 2024. She is a sought-after speaker on arbitration matters at conferences across Canada and globally.

She holds a JD (cum laude) from the University of Ottawa (2018) and a BA in Law (with Distinction) from Carleton University (2013). She is a member of the Ontario Bar Association and actively coaches the University of Ottawa's Willem C. Vis moot team.
