John R. Sandrelli

John R. Sandrelli is a Partner and the National Leader of Dentons Canada’s Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy group, widely recognized as a leading expert in Canadian restructuring and insolvency law. He advises debtors, trustees, receivers, financial institutions, commercial lenders, noteholders and investors across industries including real estate, agriculture, transportation, logistics and forestry.

He has been involved in almost every major recent restructuring in British Columbia. Notable matters include advising the Monitor in the CCAA proceedings of The Teal Jones Group, a large cross‑border forestry organization; advising the court‑appointed Receiver in the receivership of the Versante Hotel in Richmond, BC involving CA$100 million in debt; acting as lead counsel to the Jameson Broadway Birch Group in its CA$200 million CCAA restructuring of a 28‑storey affordable rental housing and health centre development; acting as counsel to the Monitor in the Trevali Mining Corporation CCAA proceedings, achieving a successful 100% recovery for a syndicate of lenders owed in excess of CA$125 million; and advising on the restructuring of Quest University Canada under the CCAA. He has also acted as counsel for the Monitor in the Veris Gold Group CCAA and Chapter 15 proceedings, for the Committee of the First Lien Secured Noteholders in the Catalyst Paper Group restructuring, and for the Rokstad Power Group in a pre‑packaged CCAA proceeding.

John holds an LL.B from the University of Toronto (1989) and is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia and the Law Society of Upper Canada.

He is recognised by Chambers Global, Chambers Canada, The Legal 500 Canada, The Best Lawyers in Canada and Who's Who Legal for Restructuring and Insolvency. He has been named in Business in Vancouver's BC500 list of the most influential business leaders in British Columbia (2024, 2025) and received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to his colleagues and community.
